"I invited Yvonne Grzenkowicz to be the guest curator for an international animated film exhibition at the Marion Art Gallery because I knew that she was the best person for the job. As director of Animation Nights New York, Yvonne constantly juries and screens animated films from around the world. The only guidance I gave her was diversity of style, animation type, and culture/background. She curated an exhibition that was not only diverse and engaging, but relevant and abundant with critical content. The exhibition, entitled Independent Motion: Twelve Animated Films from Around the World, included 2D, stop-motion, mixed media, paint-on-glass, hand-drawn, and VR animation by artists from nine countries. We were able to create tours in which we focused on various learning goals according to the audience: Animation allows viewers to explore challenging themes (including current issues) in ways that traditional film cannot, Animation is an important artform, Animation can be part of our storytelling traditions, and Inspiration can come from anywhere. I gave Yvonne a list of our AV equipment and sought advice from her on additional purchases. I relied on her for many of the technical aspects, such as sideloading a Meta Quest headset. She was present during the installation to assist with layout, sound, etc. We were very happy with the resulting exhibition. Even with a very small staff, the coordination and installation were relatively painless. Yvonne not only curated the films, but worked with the artists to secure high resolution images and biographies for the catalog. She contributed a well-written essay to the publication and helped market the exhibition on social media. She was able to get the exhibition featured on several international animation websites. Independent Motion was popular with various audiences on and off campus. We gave tours to a variety of classes including: Fundamentals of Communication, Rhetoric of Vision and Sound, Beginning to Advanced Animation & Illustration, Visual Concepts (art history survey), ESL, and Introduction to Creative Writing. Several middle and high school groups also toured the exhibition. We are hoping to tap into Yvonne’s bounty of knowledge and animation networks again in the future for another international animated film exhibition."
